These instructions explain how a Windows98 should be configured to use PlanetFusion Dial-Up.

The first two steps are to confirm that all necessary software and hardware is installed for Dial-Up Networking. If you are already using a dial up Internet connection with another provider you may jump to creating a connection.

 step 1: checking dial-up networking

  1. Double-click on My Computer My Computer. Look to see is there is a Dial-Up Networking icon Dial Up Networking in the window. If there is, skip to checking modem setup. If there is not, continue below.
  2. Double-click Control Panel Control Panel and then double-click Add/Remove Programs Add/Remove Programs
  3. Select the Windows Setup tab. You will then see a categorized list of optional software, with check marks next to the categories from which components have already been installed.

  4. Select Communications and click the Details button.
  5. Confirm that there is a check mark next to Dial-up Networking. If there is not, click in the empty box so that a check mark appears. When you are done, click OK to return to the previous menu, and then click OK again.

  6. If your computer prompts you for your Windows 98 CD-ROM or diskettes you will need to insert them.
  7. Your computer may also prompt you to restart the computer. Click OK, and the computer will reboot.
 step 2: checking modem setup
  1. Double-click on My Computer My Computer and then Control Panel Control Panel and then Modems Modems
  2. If your modem was auto detected and installed during your installation of Windows 98, it should show up in this window.  If you have a modem listed in this window, skip to creating a connection. Note the modems listed below are only an example.

  3. If no modem is installed, the Modem Setup Wizard should start automatically when you click on the "Modems" Icon. (If no modem is installed and the Modem Setup Wizard doesn't start automatically click on the Add... button.) Just follow the steps outlined by the Modem Setup Wizard and the system will do the rest. Once again, Windows 98 may need your Windows CD or diskettes and may ask to restart the computer.
 step 3: creating a connection
  1. Double-click on My Computer My Computer and then Dial-Up Networking Dial-Up Networking and then Make New Connection Make New Connection.
  2. This will open a setup wizard for adding a new dial up icon. Simply follow the instructions on screen and set the following details.
    • Type a name for the computer you are dialing:
      key in PlanetFusion
    • Select a Modem:
      Click on the downward arrow and select your modem from the list provided.
    • Click on the Next button.
    • Area code:
      key in 0845
    • Telephone number:
      key in 0504754
    • Country code:
      Click on downward arrow and select United Kingdom (44) from the list.
    • Click on the Next button
    • Click on the Finish button.
  3. You will now see a new PlanetFusion icon PlanetFusion in the Dial-up Networking box.
 step 4: configuring
  1. Move your mouse pointer directly over the PlanetFusion icon you just created, and then use your right mouse button to click on the icon. Click Properties with the Left mouse button to edit the connection settings.

  2. You will see the General properties.

    Make sure the Use country code and area code box is ticked.
  3. Click the Server Types tab.

    • Type of Dial-up Server:
      in the drop down box find and select PPP: Windows 98, Windows NT, Internet
    • Advanced options:
      make sure only Enable software compression is ticked.
    • Allowed network protocols:
      make sure only TCP/IP is ticked.
  4. Click the TCP/IP Settings button.

    • Server assigned IP address:
      select this option.
    • Server assigned name server addresses:
      select this option.
    • Use IP header compression:
      make sure this is tickked.
    • Use default gateway on remote network:
      make sure this is ticked.
    • Click OK.
  5. Click OK to close this dialog and to return to the Dial-Up Networking window.
  6. Next, create a desktop shortcut to your dial-in icon.
    • Use you Right mouse button to right-click on the PlanetFusion icon.
    • Click on Create Shortcut

    • You will get a window message that states that you can not create a shortcut here. Click Yes to have the shortcut created on the desktop instead.
    • You can now close the Dial-Up Networking window.
 step 5: connecting
  1. Double-click on the PlanetFusion icon PlanetFusion on your desktop.
  2. You will see a window like this...

  3. Enter your supplied User name and Password. If your PC is not in a public place you may wish to check the box next to Save Password.
  4. Click the Connect button and you'll see a status panel like this...

    The status will change from Dialing to Connecting to Verifying User name and Password, and finally tells you what speed you are connected at.
  5. You're on the Internet! You are now ready to check your e-mail, use your favorite web browser, access Newsgroups or download files via FTP. You should also see a connection icon Connection in the lower right of your screen next. The icon will flash green when you are actively using your connection.
  6. When you want to disconnect, you can right-click on the connection icon Connection. In the menu that appears, left-click the Disconnect option to end your session.
